The component that drops refrigerant from high-side to low-side pressure and controls flow into the evaporator.
The metering device separates the high side from the low side. Liquid enters at condensing pressure and leaves as a cold mixture at evaporating pressure. Types include fixed orifices, TXVs and EEVs. Knowing which one a system uses decides how you check the charge.
